Graduated in Physics at the Università di Milano in 1972, since 1978 his research at the Department of Information Sciences of the Università di Milano encompasses several areas of graphics and image processing, with specific reference to visual simulation, realistic visualization, classification, image recognition and compression. In Italy he pioneered the image synthesis; in 1980 he contributed to the foundation of the journal PIXEL as member of the editorial board and, in 1981, he was one of the founders of the Aicographics association.
In 1982 he founded Eidos, a company that was the first Italian company specialized in the advanced image processing till 1988, thus performing a primary pilot role in
disseminating computerized animation technologies in the Italian market.
In 1989 he created the Laboratory of Eidomatics at the Department of Information Sciences.
He was scientific secretary of the Study Commission " per Immagini" (Knowledge by Images) at the National Committee of Science and Information Technology of CNR, directed to develop the research activities in the areas of computer imaging, to which creation he gave a fundamental contribution.
For several editions he was member of the Commission for the SMAU Prize for Software Industrial Design since 1990; in 1996 he was member of the Jury. Since 1997 he is member of the CUN and member of the presidential office.
In 1998 he was nominated supervisor and coordinator of the initiatives on multimedia at Triennale di Milano.
He published more than 120 scientific and dissemination papers as well as two books.
From 1995 to 1997 he taught Computer Graphics for the Graduation Program on Industrial Design at the Architecture Faculty of Politecnico di Milano; presently, he is associate professor, teaching Computer Graphics and Image Processing for the Graduation Programs on Informatics at the Università degli Studi di Milano.
Since novembre 2003 he represents associate professors of the faculty of Science at the Academic Senate of the Universita' degli Studi di Milano.
During the last years he has been the coordinator of the national project COFIN2002 code 2002094812 "-Physical and Computational Modelization of Color Perception in Context".
He has been local coordinator of the research group E-Learning of the Unit Universita' di Milano project FIRB 2002 WEB-MINDS.
He has been responsable of the research unit of Universita' di Milano in the IP project VIRTHUALIS, V EC frame programe.
In october 2005 he got a special funding 168.000 Euro for setting up "Virtual Theater" for devoloping research programs in the field of immersive virtual reality.
